It is tidier to avoid taking a smear at period time, otherwise it doesn't really matter. In UK doctors generally advise 3 years. In the USA many women pay to have one every year. Honest thought 2 years might be a superior idea than 3, but health economics preclude that as an option unless you get the smear performed privately.
Answer:
You don't need a pap unless you’re no longer a virgin. Cervical cancer is caused by strains of the HPV virus, which is sexually transmitted. The majority of women will have had HPV of one form or another during their lifetime, usually without ever realising.
In the UK now, the guidelines state you don't need one until you're 25, altho if you want to start sooner for peace of mind, that's your choice.
Guidelines also say you only need one each 3 - 5 yrs.

Answer:
Once a year once you've been sexually active, or when you turn 18. Whichever comes first.
