My periods are never consistent. They’re very heavy and very painful! I don't know what to do I’m at my wits end. I have been dealing with this for nine years.
I just don't like the idea of taking hormones. I’m afraid they might cause cancer or other things down the road.
Answer:
Yes, there are side effects. The pill is not a good idea for you if you've had heart conditions or cancer in the past. However, most young women don't have any problems. You can speak to your physician about your concerns. MUCH more common is bloating, breakthrough bleeding, breast pain, and weight gain. It's up to you to decide if these are worse than your periods now.
Being on birth control has helped me immensely. My periods were regular at least, but I had terrible cramps, gas, constipation during my periods, which were also very heavy… I was using ultra-sized tampons for like, an hour or two each during my heavy days. Now I only need regular tampons and super ones on one or two days. It's also greatly reduced the gas and constipation problems I used to have. And I no longer get cramps the week before my period, and they're not nearly as bad. It's incredible. They have the ability to also make periods shorter (I went from 8 or 9 to 6 or 7 days).
Give it a few months to work, and change pills if yours isn't working. It will change your life and make it so much easier to function while you're on your period.
