As another poster mentioned, a hot water pack can do wonders. If you don't have one, you can always microwave a rolled up towel or T-shirt and use that. Heat is generally nice; I often feel better after taking a hot bath or having a hot drink. Putting pressure on your stomach helps too.

Some women like Midol. For me, Midol and Advil (ibuprofen) are both better than Tylenol (acetaminophen).

A bit of moderate exercise can help cramps and mood swings as well. So can a bit of chocolate, or a glass of wine (if you're old enough, that is). These things release endorphins (the so-called “feel-good hormone”). So try other things that make you feel good; watch a silly motion picture, laugh with your friends… Even if these don't make your cramps go away, you won't feel them so strongly as you would if you were just sitting around, thinking about how bad your stomach hurts :)

Also, for me, the less aware I’m of my period, the superior I can deal with my cramps. So even when I have really bad cramps, it helps me feel better if I try and act normal and just go about my every-day life. And when I use tampons or menstrual cups, I'm not so conscious of it as I was when I used to wear pads. I know it's completely psychosomatic, but it helps me.

Some types of birth control claim to help with severe menstrual cramps and other PMS-related maladies. They do work for some people, but as you can see, there are lots of ways to deal with cramps, so you don't need to begin birth control unless it's really severe each month. Hope this helps!
