I used to get cold sores so bad when I was little. I would get like 3 or 4 at a time. Since I have became an adult I hardley ever get them anymore but when I do there terrible as I am experiencing a couple as of now. They say its a form of Herpes but I dont have Herpes down below and I started getting cold sores way before I even became sexually active so if its a form of Herpes then how could I have gotten this virus? I have kissed my husband before but tht is it when I have a cold sore,, I dont do it alot but he never gets them and has never had one and people say not to have any contact with anyone with a coldsore that would involve touching them by my mouth or I will give it to them. Any information anyone has on Cold sores, please let me know because I would love to know as much as I can about them. Also what is the best OTC medicene I can take to get rid of them besides Abreva? Abreva doesnt work for me that well.
Answer:
What you have is called Herpes Simplex 1, well I am not sure about the one. But no you don't have Genital Herpes two different things entirely. Herpes Simplex is passed by direct contact and some people like my husband never gets them, I do. You cannot transfer Herpes simplex to the genital areas even if you try to. So don't worry about that part.
I have tried over the counter products before. Abreva is probably one of the better ones. I will suggest for you to go to your doctor and he will prescribe Zovarax. It comes in a tube for an oral application which honestly is the best stuff. One tube lasts me for 2 and 3 years, because only a little is applied. It's worth one trip to the doctor to get it. Zovirax is Rx only. Then there are Zovarax pills that you can take. I only use the ointment which is great even at warding them off. I also have started supplementation, Fish Oil, anti oxidants, etc. I rarely get cold sores anymore. Sometimes stress can bring them on. When you feel a cold sore coming on just use a dab of the Zovarax and they usually won't appear. That stuff is that good! Hang in there….

I picked up this herpes virus from a dirty glass served to me in a pub! If you take Lycine C for a few months this will stop the cold sores. It is available in any good health shop and works wonders! If after a few years you find that the cold sores are starting to reappear then go back on a course of Lycine C. They are non toxic and both my daughter and I and several friends have found them to be the most effective remedy! Also build up your immune system by going on a course of a multi vitamin tablet.
Hope this helps you! Another tip which I got from a magazine over 25 years ago was to mix your saliva with a small amount of coffee and dab on the affected area every hour. This actually stops the cold sore from developing, also holding an ice cube to the area when you feel a cold sore starting also helps. So try these whilst taking the Lycine C till they kick in and eliminate this horrid virus!
Answer:
A cold sore is herpes! It can be either hsv1 or hsv2. But most likely it is hsv1.
90% of Americans have cold sores (hsv1)
If you had outbreaks as a child, you probably got it from an Aunt kissing you! You know how those relatives kiss the kids.
As you have gotten older, the ob/s have become less because your body has built antibodies to fight it off.
Your husband might have it and just not show symptoms. The only way to find out is for him to be tested.
You might want to consult your doctor and take something like Valtrex.

In response to PuppyLove's answer, you can transfer Herpes Simplex 1 (oral form) to genitals. I have HSV-1 in my genitals, but I have never gotten, or get coldsores on my mouth. It is very common for this to happen. My doctor told me HSV-2 is a lot worse, and be thankful I only had HSV-1.
And when you were little your mom or dad could have kissed you and had it.
Hope that helps.
