For the last week I've been drinking 5 to 6 liters of water a day to get rid of my UTI. At the moment I'm feeling random pains, muscle aches, headaches, muscle weakness, and diarrhea. For the last week I've had just about 0 potassium. Does it sound like I have potassium deficiency?
Answer:
There are several dietary sources of potassium, especially fruits, vegetables and meats, so it is very likely you ingested at least some potassium.
It is unlikely you’ll have a deficiency due to diet from one week of poorer than average diet, especially when hypokalemia caused by insufficient consumption of potassium is quite rare, even more so in first world countries.
Maintain a healthy balanced diet.
If you are specifically concerned about potassium deficiency, I advocate eating bananas.
Depending on how much water you drank over the period of time (5 to 6 litres over a day is fine), and how you’re replacing your electrolytes, you may be superior off being concerned about water intake and replacing electrolytes, including potassium, rather than focusing on having hypokalemia.
If symptoms persist, see a doctor.
Good luck.
Answer:
As others have stated, electrolytes like potassium are vital & perilous to manipulate. To put liters into a familiar frame of reference, 3.78 liters = 1 gallon. The recommended intake of water for a 2000 calorie diet (which would have adequate potassium sources) is 1 gallon. So you had 1/3 to 1/2 a gallon more than necessary without proportionally increasing potassium. That could account for your headache, muscle aches & weakness, & diarrhea.
Sounds like a potassium deficiency/water intoxication. Make sure to get enough electrolytes, as one can die from such imbalances (such as Jennifer Strange, who participated in a competition called “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” & died from consuming too much water [http://www.itwire.com/content/view/8849/… ], & bodybuilder Mohammed Benazziza, who died from taking excessive diuretics).
Answer:
Sounds like a potassium deficiency. Muscles need potassium in order to contract. It might not be calcium because calcium stores in bones. Potassium doesn't really have a storage facility aside from muscles. It would explain the muscle aches/weakness/and headaches (brain uses a process similar to muscles to cause neurons to fire). Diarrhea though I'm not so sure, that could just have something to do with excess amounts of water being absorbed into your feces to relieve your bladder.
P.S. be careful if you use bananas for your potassium, you can't bank it up in one day, it takes a week for your body to accommodate. Eating over 5 bananas in a day can make you constipated. If after 3 days symptoms persist, call your doctor and have some blood work done.
Answer:
Potassium deficiency can cause serious problems, including heart trouble. Don't play around with it, if that's what it is. Get a supplement and begin taking it, then make sure your diet has foods rich in potassium, like bananas and oranges. There’s no way we can know for sure if you’ve a deficiency without a blood test.
Answer:
Very possible. Very easily diagnosed and very easily treated.
Eat some bananas. No joking! Bananas contain potassium.
